Reduce Insureds’ Susceptibility to Claims (RISC) Visit Fee Schedule Changed
Mark Bassingthwaighte, Esq.
December 30, 2005

While the fee charged for RISC visits has remained unchanged for the past three years, increased travel and personnel costs unfortunately necessitate an increase this year. Under the new rate structure, our calculations indicate that most firms participating will continue to realize a savings within the three years that premium credit would apply. Please note that firms already scheduled and confirmed for a RISC visit in 2006 will be charged under the old fee schedule. The bottom line of course is that ALPS knows it will receive a benefit from increased risk management efforts and that firms that participate in a RISC visit will as well. We hope that you will keep this in mind as you consider taking advantage of this program.

Pricing for voluntary visits under the new fee schedule will be as follows:

• 1 to 3 attorney firms will be charged at a base rate of $300 plus an additional $50 per attorney.

• 4 to 9 attorney firms will be charged at a base rate of $550 plus an additional $50 per attorney.

• 10 to 19 attorney firms will be charged at base rate of $850 plus an additional $45 per attorney.

• 20 to 39 attorney firms will be charged at a base rate of $1100 plus an additional $45 per attorney.

• 40 to 59 attorney firms will be charged at a base rate of $1700 plus an additional $40 per attorney.

• 60 attorney firms and over will be charged at a base rate of $2200 plus an additional $40 per attorney.

Alaska, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands will have a $10/attorney travel surcharge added to the rate. RISC Visits currently are not available in the Northern Mariana Islands.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

As a risk consultant, I have had numerous opportunities to ask attorneys who have been sued for malpractice, “What did you learn from the experience?” One response that continues to come up has been, “There is a bit of truth in the old saying that no good deed goes unpunished.” While the stories behind such a response vary, there are common insights that I feel are worth passing along.
