ALPS Foundation Services is a proud member of the ALPS family of professional service companies. Since 1988, ALPS (Attorneys Liability Protection Society) has been insuring attorneys. At that time, ALPS brought stability to the marketplace and delivered services demonstrating a higher sense of responsibility and dedication to the legal profession. Today, the ALPS mission remains the same – serving customers and the legal profession with risk-related, business, and financial services through personal service and expertise.

ALPS was formed in response to an insurance crisis that found many lawyers unable to obtain lawyers’ professional liability insurance either because of price or availability in their state. The cost of professional liability insurance for attorneys had increased dramatically, in many cases beyond the ability of the policyholder to pay. As premium costs rose, the number of commercial carriers willing or able to provide a marketplace for attorneys’ professional liability insurance dwindled.

Because of the importance that a sound marketplace for attorneys’ professional liability insurance has to the public and practicing attorneys alike, and because of the uncertainty of the continued availability of coverage from commercial carriers and the dramatic escalation in premium and costs, several state bar associations organized or endorsed bar-related insurance companies. Unfortunately, most of the states lacked the population base of attorneys necessary to support a single-state, bar-related insurer. A bar-related company formed in those states consequently would have been unable to produce the premium volume requisite to an actuarially sound company. As a result, the bar associations of an original core group of four states (West Virginia, Montana, Kansas, and South Dakota) joined forces in mid-1986 with the commitment and objective of banding together to encourage the formation of the first multi-state, bar-related insurance company, ALPS.

Today, ALPS is providing Lawyers Professional Liability and Employment Practices Liability insurance to attorneys and law firms in more than 25 jurisdictions.

ALPS, now more than ever, remains committed to meeting the needs of the legal community and in 2002, formed ALPS Foundation Services – developed specifically to meet the needs of state and local bar foundations nationwide. The mission of ALPS Foundation Services is to simply provide bar foundation services through the personal service and expertise that ALPS current customers have come to expect and enjoy.
